Johnson Lied About Potential Cancer Risks Of Its Talc Powder
A grand jury in the talc powder litigation from Washington D. C. has been examining information regarding how much Johnson & Johnson knew that their talc powder products contained cancer-causing carcinogens.
In a yearly report from Johnson & Johnson, it was disclosed that both the Justice Department along with the Securities and Exchange Commission has sent subpoenas to the company regarding the talc powder litigation but didn’t disclose much of anything else.
Johnson & Johnson recently released a statement saying there hasn’t been anything new developing with the case.
More than 14,000 lawsuits have already been filed against the company alleging that their talc powder and other products containing talc cause cancer.
Stock in J&J dropped 5% after the recent story was released.
They were aware of this for decades.
A Reuters report uncovered that Johnson & Johnson was aware that asbestos, which is known to be carcinogenic, had been found in their talc related products.
The corporation had been conducting tests between the 1970’s – the early 2000’s where they discovered asbestos in its products.
However, none of the information was ever disclosed to the public. And J&J assured the FDA that no asbestos was discovered in any of its products.
Johnson & Johnson is planning on appealing any/all of the recent verdicts found against them.
They have consistently stated that their baby powder and other products are safe for consumer use.
The company blames “junk science” and confused jurors for its recent losses in court.
They also stated that any suggestion that they knew or withheld information about the safety of talc is false.
Moving forward in investigating criminal negligence could be a huge blow for the company.
If they knew their product was dangerous but lied about it to hide that fact, it will cost them.
Interestingly, it was uncovered in the investigation that after the discovery of cancer-causing carcinogens in their talc products the company began marketing those products heavily to the minority communities.
More information is surely to come.
