What is Roundup?

Roundup is a weed killer that was first sold in 1974. The active ingredient in most formulations of Roundup is glyphosate, a chemical that the World Health Organization (WHO) calls a “probable human carcinogen.”

Since 1987, U.S. farms have gone from spraying 11 million pounds of glyphosate a year to nearly 300 million pounds a year.

In 2017, the State of California added the glyphosate found in Roundup to its list of cancer-causing chemicals.

Roundup is made by Monsanto. Monsanto denies that glyphosate is a carcinogen, as does the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Why are people filing Roundup cancer lawsuits?

Nevertheless, hundreds of cancer patients have sued Monsanto, saying the company should have warned them about Roundup cancer risk.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) raised a red flag in 2015, announcing that glyphosate can lead to cancer, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Their report states, “The evidence in humans is from studies of exposures, mostly agricultural, in the USA, Canada, and Sweden published since 2001. In addition, there is convincing evidence that glyphosate also can cause cancer in laboratory animals.”

The Roundup cancer lawsuits have been filed by patients suffering several kinds of cancer, including

  • Non-Hodgkin lymphoma
  • Leukemia
  • B-Cell Lymphoma
  • Follicular Lymphoma
  • Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma
  • Anaplastic T-Cell Lymphoma
  • Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
  • Small Lymphocytic Lymphoma
  • Mantle Cell Lymphoma
  • Primary Central Nervous System (CNS) Lymphoma
  • Multiple Myeloma

Who is most at risk?

People who work with Roundup and glyphosate on the job run a risk of serious illness. Farm workers, landscapers, and people working in garden centers or nurseries are exposed to glyphosate while spraying or handling the herbicide.

They can also be exposed to Roundup-contaminated food or water.

How can I tell if Roundup made me sick?

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma caused by Roundup can cause:

  • Swollen, painless lymph nodes in the neck, armpits or groin
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fever
  • Soaking night sweats
  • Coughing, trouble breathing or chest pain
  • Weakness and tiredness that don’t go away
  • Pain, swelling or a feeling of fullness in the abdomen
