The panel’s order sending 40 Sorin cases to a single court.

A panel of judges in Miami has granted medical device maker LivaNova’s request to combine a raft of lawsuits against them into a single case. Forty complaints against the German company, whose Sorin 3T Heater-Cooler is suspected of having exposed surgery patients to potentially deadly bacteria, will now be heard in a single Pennsylvania federal district court.

Last week we wrote that LivaNova’s Sorin 3T Heater-Cooler, used to manage blood temperature during open-heart surgery, exposed them to a potentially fatal bacteria.

The United States Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation ruled on Thursday that Sorin cases currently before 21 federal courts be consolidated into a single case. The panel chose the Middle District of Pennsylvania, and Judge John E. Jones, III, to hear the consolidated cases.

Besides the 40 Sorin cases pending in 21 federal district courts, there are 33 state court cases pending in eight states.
